8/3/2010 - LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Space and Missile Systems Center will host its first Diversity Day Wednesday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. in the Schriever Space Complex courtyard and Gordon Conference Center.
The center has set aside a major portion of the duty day to observe and acknowledge the cultural variety in its diverse workforce. Additionally, the day will allow SMC an opportunity to continue to build positive relationships among Airmen (both military and civilian) and those from surrounding communities through Wingman Day activities planned for individual units.
Former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper spear headed the Wingman Day Program in 2004, and it has been an ongoing Air Force-wide program ever since.
The guest speaker for Diversity Day is Lupe Ontiveros, award-winning actress, producer, community activist and visionary. She is known for her many character roles in movies and television, to include the movies "Selena", the Oscar-nominated foreign film "EL NORTE" and most recently in "Our Family Wedding" and the TV show "Desperate Housewives."
Ms. Ontiveros also has a family connection to SMC - her son Nick Ontiveros works at the center.
Diversity Day events are held to showcase different perspectives in the SMC workplace and community.
Media representatives interested in covering this event can RSVP by sending an email to: smcpa.media@losangeles.af.mil or by calling (310) 653-2369/2370 by 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4.
